to lead in like ohio and florida. we'll pick up pennsylvania. we think we have a good shot at virginia, new hampshire, new mexico, nevada. that's the pathway to victory for john mccain. >> e see how all those states were blue? his confident predictions that john mccain was going to win all those states in 2008 were wrong in every single instance. they lost every single one of those states. even though it seemed like he was going to win all of those states the day before the election. he didn't say like he felt they were going to win. he said they have the polling data that showed they were going to win and they did not win in any of those states. this is just part of the way the game is played. it's just bluffing. and that is important context for understanding what's going on in the last four days of the campaign. there are patterns to how presidential elections end. some of the same stuff happens every four years. specifically, in 1992, the republican candidate was poppy bush. he went and campaigned in pennsylvania. and then the next day, he lost pennsylvania. the next election, 1996

but this campaign has been counting on, quite frankly, florida or virginia to be called and, of course, ohio and they can see all of our coverage and all of the net works talking a lot about ohio but this room, they're politically clued in and knows that this campaign needs ohio. i'm tethered to the broadcast location but i haven't seen any of the top key advisers. they're sort of hunkered down as are the romneys. mitt and ann in a hotel room with the five boys and the grandchildren and paul ryan also here in boston. he's not in the room with the romneys. he and his wife and his mother who has been on the trail with him, they're staying at another hotel here in boston, not far from here but they're watching the returns come in separately. i have reached out to a couple of sources on the campaign and can tell you the night is not over. these states are very close along the east coast, florida, virginia, as i mentioned earlier, they're not ready to certainly concede anything, but they're also not terribly upbeat about the way the night is unfolding. >> to sharyn alfonsi in wisconsin and she's

monolithic voting group. vicky, i want to turn to you, the florida numbers are particularly fascinating approximate this. we were looking at a recent poll from the miami herald that looks at sort of obama and romney support. when you include cuban americans in the counting, president obama is leading by a slight margin, 51%. if, however, you look at it with cuban americans excluded from it, then all of a sudden president obama it leading at about 65%. obviousli obviously, that's an krags indication that you end up with national origin and other issues. >> i think florida is a microcosm for that diversity. in south florida, the miami area, you have a cuban american vote that's very republican. regardless of the generation. then you go into the i-4 corridor and you see the explosion of the puerto rican vote. interestingly enough, you have democrats but also a growing number of independents. then if you go even further, you have a smattering of mexican americans. what is the trend for the future there. it's not mexican americans in texas. it's going to be puerto ricans and cuban americans.
